From there, the views of the Lake Michigan shoreline are seemingly endless, and Navy Pier, Millennium Park and Lake Shore Drive look small enough to be children’s toys. Developers from Chicago and China are teaming up to build an 88-story skyscraper along the Chicago River. Soaring 1,191 feet above Wacker Drive, Vista is now Chicago’s third tallest building, eclipsed only the 1,453-foot-tall Willis (formerly Sears) Tower and the 1,388-foot Trump International Hotel. The roof is another three floors above that. Vista’s top residential floor is 93 stories from street level. The view from Vistaīecause Wacker Drive is several stories high, the tallest part of Vista has two heights: 101 stories from the ground, but 95 stories from street level. Designed by award-winning architect and Chicago native Jeanne Gang, upon completion Vista Tower will be city’s third largest building. At 95 stories tall, Vista will be the cities third tallest building and the tallest structure in the world designed by a woman. More projects are in the works, waiting for city approval. “When I’m designing a building, I don’t think ‘I’m a woman designing this building,’” she said. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the Magellan Development Group and Beijing-based Wanda Group have announced the 95-story Vista Tower is set to break ground this summer. Currently, there are five 800-foot-plus towers under construction in Chicago, including the 1,198-foot-tall Vista Tower in Lakeshore East. While Vista will be the tallest building in the world designed by a woman-owned firm, it remains only the third tallest building in Chicago and the 47th tallest building in the world.īut for Gang, Vista’s designation as the tallest woman-designed building in the world is not the most important point of pride. ![]() In 2017, just one third of newly licensed architects were female, according to the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.Īnd that holds true for skyscraper design as well.
